Studies in Creative Drumming
is a method book for drumset. It is comprehensive in the fact that it starts from very basic rock beats and progesses into very complex and difficult independency exercises to give the student the ability to play any combinations of beats he chooses. The book also demonstrates basic rock fills and progresses into very advanced double sticking combinations. This gives the student the ability to move around the drumset and play endless combinations of rhythmns. The book is divided into three basic sections. The first being the study of rock beats and all the possible combinations with different right hand ride cymbal patterns. The second being the study of drum fills and drum solos. The third section is the study of the swing and shuffle modes, with a wide variety of independence exercises, fills and solo ideas.
The book was inspired by Jason Stevens, who was a student of Gary Via for five years. Jason is now attending The University of Miami on a full music scholarship.
The book takes an average of two years to complete considering the student is a fairly hard worker and practices an average of four times a week.
